Bristol Skip Hire Firm Highlight Fly-tipping Hotspots

While fly-tipping is an issue across the country, it appears that Bristol is an area that is experiencing a great deal more activity than other cities.

Fly-tipping has become such a problem that local skip hire firm, Bateman Skips, has highlighted various no-go zones; areas that they refuse to leave their skips overnight.

This follows what the company is calling the worst example of it yet, sharing pictures of what their skip looked like when left on Milner Road.

Being hijacked by fly-tippers, the skip was overflowing, filled with household waste that ran over onto the street and pavement.

Images of the skip were shared by the Keep Bristol Tidy twitter page.

“Why are we allowing this in the streets of Bristol?” they asked.

“Containment requirements are very clear on skip licences for public highways,” they added.

Though using someone else’s bin doesn’t sound like a massive deal, for the skip hire firms that have to collect the waste, it really is.

Lee Graham, the general manager of Bateman Skips, said:

“It is an absolute nightmare for us, and often for the customer,” he said. “People hire skips only for anybody from anywhere to come along and just dump their stuff in it – it’s very frustrating.”

Now, the company will roll out a ‘wait and drop’ service in problem areas, refusing to leave their skips anywhere that is prone to tipping.

“The best solution is having it off the road, in someone’s garden or on their drive, but there are obviously a lot of places where this is not possible,” said Mr Graham.

“There are many areas dotted around Bristol where we’ve had problems like this – and this area will be added to that list – where we now have to talk to the customer and offer them a wait-and-drop service.

“That involves us leaving a skip for 35-40 minutes or so, and waiting with it, for them to load it up, rather than leaving it for a couple of days and coming back and finding this sort of thing has happened,” he added.

Axe Skip Hire Expand Fleet

As you will know by reading many of our previous posts, we are passionate about sharing skip hire solutions to those that need them, providing a platform in which consumers can search, compare and book such services with ease. This is why we are always keen to learn of skip firms investing in their services and products, adding value to the UK’s flourishing hire industry.

This week we learn that Axe Skip, a rental firm based in Axminster, has invested in its fleet, adding additional skips to its collection. Signalling great expansion for the brand, these new skips will have a huge positive impact on the brand, allowing them to facilitate a larger number of customers.

This investment has been made possible by an asset funding line from Santander Business Banking, allowing them to purchase a 7.5-tonne DAF lorry. This is the second lorry of its kind to be purchased by Axe this year.

James Bostock, Director at Axe Skip Hire Ltd, said the following:

“Axe Skip Hire continues to see strong local demand for our low-cost, reliable service, and it’s great to be able to upgrade our fleet with a new DAF lorry with help from Santander.

“We know that our customers value the recycling aspect of the business and we are now focused on taking our brand deeper into our current markets and hopefully further afield.”

Having been in business since 1985, this skip hire company boasts 5 lorries and over 500 skips, making them a huge player in the local market.

Deliveroo Signs Scooter Hire Deal

Deliveroo is regarded as one of the greatest online businesses of our time, having successfully streamlined the fast food delivery industry. Permitting users to order food from any establishment and have it delivered via them, Deliveroo has well and truly filled a gap in the market.

But, how have they scaled up their small operation to be a multimillion-pound household brand? Well, through the use of vehicle rental of course!

If you have ever used Deliveroo, you will see that their drivers deliver on scooters or bikes, with hundreds of these branded vehicles speeding past us in most UK cities.

Now, the ever-expanding brand are looking to change things up, launching an electric scooter rental scheme. In a plea to ‘electrify London’; the scheme has been formed in partnership with moped rental firm, Elmovo. Omitting zero emissions, these scooters will both improve their delivery times while positioning Deliveroo as a brand that cares about the planet.

Scooter hire from £.183

The scheme will offer riders scooter hire services for just £1.83, providing that they dedicate themselves to a 6-hour slot. This includes tax, insurance and any other costs involved in running the scooter.

“Deliveroo wants every meal we deliver to be truly amazing but that is only possible if the delivery is sustainable alongside the great food we offer” says Deliveroo UK and Ireland’s managing director, Dan Warne.

“Electric mopeds and bikes represent an environmentally friendly, neighbourhood-conscious solution to cut emissions and save riders money in the long run.”

At present, there are 72 of these mopeds on their way to the city. However, with over 500 riders already pre-registering to hire them, there is evident demand for a whole lot more.

Let us know what you think about this partnership. Would knowing your food was being delivered through environmentally-friendly means impress you? Leave your comments with us.

Skip Hire Firm in Norfolk Blamed for Fatal Accident

While we tend to focus on the positive things going in the world of hire, the truth is, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Just this week, we learn the sad story of a fatal accident involving a skip hire worker. According to sources, a 29-year-old man from Besthorpe, Norfolk, was operating a screener machine when he died. Employed by Baldwin Skip Hire, James Criddle died due to suffocation.

Norwich Crown Court was informed that his clothes were caught in the machine.

While deaths in the manual world are not unheard of, many are criticising the skip rental company, seeing its Managing Director, Robert Baldwin, pleading his innocence against claims of manslaughter due to gross negligence.

The machine responsible was purchased from eBay, with fellow staff members claiming that it had no safety guards and was not fit for purpose.

Prosecutor Julia Faure-Walker, prosecuting, said:

“It was bought second-hand on eBay and not in the condition it would have gone to market.

“The guards had been removed. The workers were not protected from the dangerous working parts.”

According to the prosecution, investing in a new safety guard would have prevented this awful incident, not putting the operator in any form of danger.

The trial is still underway, with both the skip hire business and the decease’s family eager to gain closure.

Norfolk skip hire depot goes up in flames

Last night, a skip hire depot in Norfolk went up in flames; a devastating eventuality for the rental business as well as its staff. Based in North Walsham, the fire took place at an industrial estate. This saw two crews of firefighters make their way to the scene. Reported as a ‘ferocious fire’, the two crews were battling the flames through the night, still combatting the element as the sun rose this morning (Sunday 18th February).

Speaking this morning, a Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service control room supervisor said that the two crews from Massingham and Sheringham were still making attempts to put the fire out on Cornish Way. He also confirmed that Lyngate Road, the road that surrounds the hire depot, remained shut until further notice. While an inconvenience for some, safety is now the priority for the emergency services.

Reported to them at 9.30pm, news of the fire quickly spread across their local community, with many waiting patiently for the ten appliances to put out the fire. At the height of the flames, the scene saw 60 firefighters do their best to settle the fire; using a whole range of specialist equipment when doing so. This included aerial ladders, a water carrier, control unit as well as main and hose reel jets.

Eager to manage the impact of the fire, firefighters were heavily concerned about the safety of local residents following the blaze. Instructing those living by to keep windows and doors shut, the atmosphere of the area was tense to say the least.

Firefighters are expected to be damping down for most of the day; a true testament to the emergency services here in the UK.

Skip hire entrepreneur launches junk recycling business

A Welsh skip hire boss based in Newport, South Wales, has launched a brand new venture offering convenient junk collection and recycling services in the region. From removing unwanted to sofas to clearing out old garages, Junk4Joy plans to compete with the domestic skip hire industry by offering an environmentally friendly means by which to dispose of waste as they aim to recycle 90% of the junk collected.

James Norvill has a wealth of experience in the waste management business having operated the skip hire company, GD Environmental Services, for many years. It is this experience which led the businessman to note a gap in the market for an eco-friendly solution to the disposal of domestic junk.

Initially Junk4Joy will employ eight full time staff with two specialist vehicles operating in the South West Wales region, Mr Norvill revealed in a recent interview with a Welsh newspaper. The new service has already undergone a full trial in the area where it undertook a highly diverse range of jobs, discovering there was definite call for the service in the area.

As well as offering an environmentally friendly alternative to disposing of unwanted household items, as Junk4Joy aims to recycle 90% of the waste collected, the new scheme also hopes to help reduce the problem of fly tipping which cost Welsh taxpayers £2.29 million last year alone.

Skip hire boss makes final journey on one of his own lorries

A popular skip hire boss from Dorset made his final journey on the back of one of his own lorries more typically used to transport the skips he offered for hire as part of his business.

John “Butch” Nash was described as a legend in the town of Portland in Dorset where he lived and his company was based. It was only fitting, therefore, for the 64-year-old to take a final tour of the town he loved so much before being finally laid to rest.

Butch, as he was known to many, died following a battle with cancer. One of his last requests was for one of his skip hire lorries to transport him as he made his way through Portland for the very last time. The skip hire lorry was decked out with flower wreaths and the banner “John ‘Butch’ Nash – off for a doss- 1947-2011” hung over the back of the vehicle.

The skip hire company founder was a well-known figure in the town having previously acted as a councilor, and he even has a stand named after him at the local football club.

Portland Stone Ltd was founded by Mr. Nash in 1997, specializing in waste management, stones supplies as well as skip hire and machinery rental services. His son, 25-year-old Danny Nash, will now take over the running of the business.

Skip hire company being investigated after bonfire reports

Skip hire company being investigated after bonfire reports

A skip hire company in Lancashire is being investigated after the fire services were called to extinguish a fire reported to be related to the skip firm, which was causing acrid smoke to pollute the area.

Residents complained when a large bonfire was set alight on the A1 Skips Holme Road site in Clayton-le-Moors last week, with the residents claiming that carpets and plastics were being burned which as causing the area to become engulfed by acrid smoke.

However the skip hire company at the centre of the allegations argued that the land on which the bonfire was burning did not belong to them and was completely unrelated to their skip rental business.

According to local newspaper reports, the residents had complained previously to councillors over bonfires which they claim were being started by the skip hire company to burn waste.

The fire service revealed that they were called to extinguish the fire after the Environment Agency tried and failed to get A1 Skips to put out the bonfire which was causing big black clouds of smog to hang over the area, distressing the residents. The bonfire was burning on an area of land approximately 150 square meters in size, a mixture of commercial and domestic waste was found set alight.

The Environment Agency are now reportedly carrying out an investigation into the large scale bonfire and attempting to establish whether or not the skip hire company are involved as the residents suggest.
