Clothing rentals on the rise

As you know, here at Anything for Hire, we are huge advocates of the rental model. This goes for everything that the rental industry encompasses. From cars and tools to homes, renting is cost-effective and provides consumers all over the world with access to the things that they need.

This is why we were thrilled to hear the news of a new trend; clothing hire. While hiring suits, tuxedos, proms dresses and wedding attire has been popular for decades, every day clothes have always fallen into the ownership category. But, apparently, we are now opening up to the idea of hiring day-to-day attire across the globe.

As a trend that is being adopted in China in particular, people are renting items like jeans, t-shirts and even pants through online apps and websites!

YCloset, the company pioneering in the Chinese clothing hire market, says that they have experienced great success “targeting the fast fashion daily wear market, where people can wear our products to work, during the weekend and also to a party”.

Girl Meets Dress’s founder, Anna Bance, says the same shift is happening in the UK. While they started hiring out designer clothing, the market has well and truly opened up to include much more than suits and wedding dresses.

“Already it’s not just for special occasions” says Ms Bance.

“Some customers may want one dress a year for their husband’s work do in the city but others are changing their habits and hiring a couple of dresses a week”.

Let us know what you think about the clothing hire model. Would you be comfortable wearing clothes owned by someone else? Here at Anything for Hire, we simply love this concept. Being affordable and great for the environment; what isn’t there to like?

Debenhams rent out floor space in a plea to save brand

It is no secret that UK high street department stores are struggling, seeing a lower footfall as online shopping continues to be the nation’s preferred way to shop. Household brand, Debenhams, are one of the largest companies to enter troubled waters, constantly seeing their share price plummet as profits fails to meet market expectations.

From closing down underperforming stores across the country to cutting 320 jobs, Debenhams are going to great lengths to work towards their £10m cost-saving objectives.

However, in order to combat struggling bank balances, the brand is looking at the rent model, hiring out shop space to outside vendors in a plea to introduce new money into the business.

The idea was first formed by the company’s Chief Executive, who last year put various changes in place in a plea to shake things up. Cutting ties with various partners, the company brought capital in by signing a deal with Sweat!, opening three gyms in surplus shop space. Bringing additional money into the struggling business, Debenhams now takes another look at the rental model, this week announcing that they will be renting more space out to WeWork.

Who is WeWork?

WeWork is a fast-growing American company; a flexible-office provider that has created working environments across the globe. From single office desks and suites to full HQs; WeWork promises ‘creativity, focus, and connection’ through their co-working spaces.

By joining forces with such a modern, up-and-coming brand, it appears Debenhams aim is to bring itself into the 21st century. However, by offloading space to WeWork, Debenhams are evidently looking to scale back on high street spending. So, will further investments be made to heighten the brand’s online presence? As a tactic that many other department stores have used, ramping up online deals and nurturing Debenhams’ community of digital shoppers should be the priority.

Designer shoe hire: Do’s and Don’ts

When first finding out that you can hire shoes you may feel a little uneasy, wondering whether this is one – hygienic and two – affordable. At AnythingForHire.com we can safely answer yes to both, celebrating the extraordinary opportunities the hire market offers our customers.

Serving brides in particular designer shoe hire is not just for the wedding hire market, utilised for men and women for the following events:

•Birthday (including sweet 16’s)

•Business events

•Modelling shoots

•Family events

•Religious and cultural celebrations

•Engagement parties

•Funerals

•And much more!

Learn the market

It is essential that you do your research before parting with any of your hard earned cash, sifting through the various online suppliers and reading the reviews. Only from this exercise will you separate the worthy from the worthless.

One firm that seems to be lording this niche market is the aptly named Cinderella Me, gaining a lot of positive press recently. Laura Powell of the Daily Mail writes:

“Like most women, I love shoes – particularly those beautiful designer ones with sky high heels and prices to match. But, like most women, I can’t bring myself to stump up hundreds of pounds for a pair of stilettos I’ll only wear a handful of times. So, what’s the answer? Well, I think it might be a service called Cinderella Me, which loans out designer shoes for a fraction of their retail price.

As the journalists clearly points out most women cannot afford to fork out hundreds of pounds for shoes for each special occasion, making designer shoe hire a pretty genius idea.

Hiring vs buying suits

Whether you are getting married, attending an important business event or a religious ceremony, image is key. Wanting to prevail a certain sense of style and class we can often hear the faint cries from the wallet. However, this should not be the case, with so many suit hire options now at the disposal of the gentleman.

Cost

Your average high-end suit will cost you around the £500 mark, often reserved for special occasions and spending most of it’s life in the wardrobe. In comparison to hiring a suit this is an expensive option, with a vast number of suppliers offering suit hire packages from as little as £100.

For this reason hiring a suit for a wedding for example is a great idea, permitting brides and grooms to spend their hard-earned wedding budget in other areas such as wedding cars and the all-important honeymoon.

Standard

Where many believe that standard and material is compromised if they were to hire this could not be more false, with shops such as Moss Bros, Peter Posh and Greenwoods all passionate about quality.

According to suit hire firm Burton style sits at the forefront on the hire business:

‘Sometimes it’s really worth making that little bit of extra effort to look great for a special occasion but knowing what to wear isn’t always easy. That’s where we come in!

Whether you are getting married, attending a prom or you want to wear something different for the races this year, we have pulled together the perfect collection of stylish looks for every occasion’.

Hire agreements

It is true that many are put off hiring suits and other services due to the worry of damage. Understanding that some scags and stains are inevitable many suppliers are pretty open-minded, working to create a hire agreement that suits all.

One newlywed, Paul, shared his opinion on wedding suit hire with us, commenting that although he was slightly paranoid about ruining the suit it saved him a whole lot of money.

‘I would highly recommend hiring with Burton. I rented my wedding suit as well as a formal suit to take on honeymoon with me. I hired them both for a week and enjoyed change from £300. That you would not get if you were to purchase’.

Kate Middleton’s hired hats to be auctioned in June

Hired hats worn by Kate Middleton before she became the Duchess of Cambridge are to be auctioned and are expected to fetch up to £1500 each. The stylish hats on hire were worn by Kate to social and ceremonial events.

The straw hats will be auctioned in June by Kerry Taylor Auctions.

A spokeswoman for the auctioneers said: “With an eye for economy and practicality – hats take up masses of storage space – she preferred to hire a hat for the day rather than purchase it outright. She was sometimes accompanied by her mother, Carole, who helped her make the right selection. The lots are being sold with hire receipts and copies of diary entries showing Kate’s appointments at the shop.”

Kate wore one of the hats, a black and white Philip Somerville hat, when William was invested as Knight of the Garter in June 2008. She watched along with the Duke’s family as he paraded through the grounds of Windsor Castle.

In 2010, Kate hired a black Aurora hat to wear to the wedding of one of the Duke’s friends in October. It was at that time that pictures of the couple surfaced, starting speculations that the two might tie the knot themselves. A month later, the couple announced their own engagement.

Kerry Taylor Auctions are the same auctioneers who sold Kate’s see-through net dress, worn on the catwalk in a 2002 fashion show at St Andrews University, for a staggering £78,000. It was at the university that the Duke met Kate, sparking off the royal romance.

New hat hire showroom opened in North Wales

A new showroom offering hat hire services, as well as special occasion hats and fascinators for sale, has recently opened its doors for the first time in Bangor-on-Dee near Wrexham in North Wales.

The latest addition to the Get Ahead Hats family has been launched by Sheila Morgan at Potters Brook Barn on the farm where she grew up and still lives today.

The official launch of the hat hire outlet near Wrexham even boasted a famous face as former butler to Princess Diana, Paul Burrell, attended the launch to show his support for the new venture. The I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contestant and former royal butler now runs his own floristry business and was said to be keen to see the new hat hire showroom opened near Wrexham.

Get Ahead Hats offer an extensive range of hats and fascinators for hire in a range of colours, styles and finishes. The new showroom in North Wales has opened just in time to offer local ladies the chance to hire or buy a stunning hat for an upcoming wedding, race day or special occasion.

Prom dress hire business transformed into leading boutique

A recent university graduate from Swansea University has succeeded in turning her online dress hire business into a leading fashion boutique specialising in glamorous ball gowns for proms and beauty pageants, less than a year after launching her company.

25-year-old Kylie Hearne graduated from University after completing her degree in Classical Civilisation, however like many recent graduates, Kylie found it difficult to secure employment in the current economic climate. Undeterred, the enterprising youngster came up with the idea of launching her own dress rental business online after struggling to find a ball gown within her budget.

Last May the Stardust Boutique was launched, thanks to a £800 loan from the 25-year-old’s partner, Kylie invested in 10 gowns which she offered for hire through her website, with all of her profits being put straight back into the business, the graduate explained in a recent interview with a Welsh newspaper. The entrepreneur also succeeded in securing a start-up grant to help develop her dress rental and boutique business further.

Now, less than a year after starting her business online, Kylie has opened her own shop selling a wide range of glamorous and glitzy prom dresses and occasion wear, with items also available to buy online. The boutique owner has succeeded in promoting her brand through sponsorship of beauty pageants and also charitable causes.

After launching her business as a dress hire provider with just 10 dresses and a single clothes rail borrowed from her mother, the Swansea University graduate has succeeded in turning her venture into a thriving business, turning over more than £50,000 – not bad for a girl who didn’t even own a mannequin to display her dresses less than 12 months ago!
