HSS Hire Back on Track

One of the biggest tool hire brands of our time, HSS Hire, has this week revealed their latest financial figures, narrowing losses substantially.

Having recently been in the news for their worrying loss levels, it appears the brand has turned a real corner. Stats show that losses for the first quarter shrunk from £10.2m to a more respectable £7.4m.

Revenue is also on the up for the firm, growing an attractive 3.9 per cent to just over £161m.

Though there are many factors that have had a bearing on this positive news, the business claims rental activity has spiked, with their improved level of service seeing people rent more, more frequently. Their service side of the business has also seen a slight boost, with activity up 10.6%.

Chief executive Steve Ashmore called this “a solid performance” for the first half, “in which the continued focus on driving profitable revenue growth through strong price control and effective cost management led to a significant improvement in return on capital and a further reduction in leverage.”

“The widely reported headwinds in the economy have affected the tool hire market but HSS is well placed to manage these more challenging conditions,” Ashmore added.

“We have taken additional action to further optimise our operating cost base and have a clear strategy to build upon our existing excellent market positions, leaving us well placed to continue to grow share in all of our markets.”

Plant hire firm, True Plant Hire, has this week announced details of a new purchase, investing in a piece of kit that could change the shape of its business. Buying their most expensive item to date, the Midlands company has added a Hyundai HX235LCR to its fleet.

According to the company’s Director, the digger will extend its current plant fleet, allowing them to evolve into “one-stop-shop” for all plant and tool hire requirements.

Headed up by a young entrepreneur, Tom Macfarlane, the business now boasts 28 machines. This includes 5 x micro excavators and 5 x 13-tonne excavators.

Talking about the decision to buy a Hyundai, Jack said, “We had a demonstrator HX220L from our local dealer TBS Plant Ltd and I just loved everything about it to be fair. Hyundai has vastly improved the joysticks on the HX models, and they are so much better, I just can’t fault them!”

Jack continued, “I’m very impressed with this machine, it’s got plenty of power in the dig, and as far as I’m aware it has got more power than anything else in its class, in addition, the pushing power when dozing is nothing short of phenomenal, it’s a right beast!”

Bristol Skip Hire Firm Highlight Fly-tipping Hotspots

While fly-tipping is an issue across the country, it appears that Bristol is an area that is experiencing a great deal more activity than other cities.

Fly-tipping has become such a problem that local skip hire firm, Bateman Skips, has highlighted various no-go zones; areas that they refuse to leave their skips overnight.

This follows what the company is calling the worst example of it yet, sharing pictures of what their skip looked like when left on Milner Road.

Being hijacked by fly-tippers, the skip was overflowing, filled with household waste that ran over onto the street and pavement.

Images of the skip were shared by the Keep Bristol Tidy twitter page.

“Why are we allowing this in the streets of Bristol?” they asked.

“Containment requirements are very clear on skip licences for public highways,” they added.

Though using someone else’s bin doesn’t sound like a massive deal, for the skip hire firms that have to collect the waste, it really is.

Lee Graham, the general manager of Bateman Skips, said:

“It is an absolute nightmare for us, and often for the customer,” he said. “People hire skips only for anybody from anywhere to come along and just dump their stuff in it – it’s very frustrating.”

Now, the company will roll out a ‘wait and drop’ service in problem areas, refusing to leave their skips anywhere that is prone to tipping.

“The best solution is having it off the road, in someone’s garden or on their drive, but there are obviously a lot of places where this is not possible,” said Mr Graham.

“There are many areas dotted around Bristol where we’ve had problems like this – and this area will be added to that list – where we now have to talk to the customer and offer them a wait-and-drop service.

“That involves us leaving a skip for 35-40 minutes or so, and waiting with it, for them to load it up, rather than leaving it for a couple of days and coming back and finding this sort of thing has happened,” he added.

NextBike to Bring Electric Bike Hire to Cardiff

Being headquartered here in Cardiff, we at Anything for Hire are always eager to find out of what is going on in the local hire market. And, this week, we were thrilled to learn that popular bike hire firm, NextBike, we introducing new bicycles to the city.

Whilst already having a presence in Cardiff, Nextbike now look to offer electric bikes to their Welsh customers, doubling the size of their fleet as a result.

Arriving in Cardiff last year, the residents and tourists of the area have hired NextBikes hundreds and thousands of times, proving particularly popular amongst the students of Cardiff. Covering 570km by 390,000 customers, Cardiffians make up a huge 51% of the brand’s customer base.

But, with the addition of electric bikes, the brand can attract and serve a whole new demographic of riders.

According to the company, they are particularly interested in accommodating disabled people, providing more adaptive bicycles that can serve their needs.

Due to the expansion, another 500 bikes will join the current fleet, requesting an additional 38 docs to house them.

A spokesperson from Pedal Power, the firm contracted to run the scheme in Cardiff, said:

“We don’t have enough bikes in the city at the moment. We need more and that’s why we’re getting more.

“We’re getting more people riding – people who have not ridden for a long time and now are. That’s the biggest success.”

But, the company are aware that there may well be some bumps along the way. Apparently, staff are experiencing many challenges when running the scheme. From an increased number of vandalisms reported to the bikes needing constant repairs due to the amount in which they are used, scaling up the number of bikes will mean scaling up the operation as a whole.

Let us know what you think. Is Cardiff ready for another 500 rental bikes? Leave your comments with us.

GoldCar Named Worst Car Hire Company

Here at Anything for Hire, we are always keen to promote hire businesses that are credible, reputable and offering services that are worth investing in. However, not all hire businesses possess these qualities.

Today, we learn that consumer group, Which?, has been conducting its annual investigation into car hire companies, ascertaining which are letting their customers down and which are providing positive customer service experiences.

According to their research, GoldCar are the ones to swerve, finding them the worst car hire company from this year’s annual car hire survey. Influenced by customer feedback and reviews, Which found that GoldCar were pressure selling and employed staff that were rude to customers.

While thought to be one of the cheapest car hire providers around, it appears consumers want more than a cheap deal from suppliers nowadays.

The survey

The survey revealed that over 40% of GoldCar’s customers experienced problems, with Which? saying that “terrible customer service or spurious credit card charges” were the biggest issues.

GoldCar received a score of 39% for customer service while Cicar (Canary Islands Car) received an admirable 97%.

But, this is not the first time the Spanish firm has come under fire, having been at the bottom of this survey’s rankings in five of the last six years.

Rory Boland, the group’s travel editor, said:

“One wrong turn at airport arrivals could easily make or break your holiday. In an industry dogged by unscrupulous practices and interminable add-ons, making the right choice is paramount, so it is good that customers can rely on companies like Cicar and Enterprise to deliver a quality service.”

He added: “Our advice is: don’t fall for headline prices, vet your car hire firm and, whatever you do, avoid GoldCar – it could end up not being a bargain at all and leave you wishing you’d stayed at home.”

Let us know what you think. Have you had a bad experience with GoldCar?

You Can Now Hire the Spice World Bus!

As you will know by looking through our website, you can hire pretty much anything nowadays. From chocolate foundations to chairs and even bars for the garden, the rental market is just as weird as it is wonderful.

And, this week, it just got a whole lot more exciting!

It appears that the iconic Spice World bus made famous by the Spice Girls in the late 90s has re-emerged, being turned into an Airbnb! Adorned with the iconic union artwork, the full-size London bus can be rented by groups in need of accommodation, suitable for three guests at a time.

Completely gutted and renovated, the bus will be open for guests in time for the big Spice Girls Reunion. Taking place at Wembley Stadium in June, the bus will no doubt be in demand amongst die-hard Spice Girls fans in need of central London accommodation.

Suzanne Godley, the brains behind this incredible project, sees this business venture as a labour of love, being a huge fan of the British girlband since her childhood.

“My parents were subjected to my tone-deaf performance as Baby Spice, and I must have watched the Spice World move hundreds of times,” she said.

‘And while I have grown up over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever grown out of my love for them.”

The bus will be located at Wembley Park on the nights of the concert, being of close proximity to the concert venue.

“We’ve worked hard over the past few months to turn the bus into a home, in keeping with its legacy, and I’m so excited to open it up to the public with the support of Airbnb,” Godley continued.

Let us know what you think. Would you hire this Spice World bus to spend the night in?
