A skip hire boss in Northern Ireland is being questioned by police on suspicion of dumping illegal waste on the outskirts of the city of Belfast.
The investigation is being headed up by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency who say they’ve been following up complaints regarding the illegal dumping of building waste on the site outside Belfast, some of which date back as far as 10 years.
Building rubble makes up the majority of the waste that has been illegally dumped on the land. During the course of the agency’s investigation, they uncovered asbestos and other toxic materials amongst the building rubble.
The man who is being investigated in relation to the illegal dumping of building waste is believed to be involved in skip hire. The man is being investigated on money laundering and criminal damage charges.
The owner of the land where tonnes and tonnes of rubble has been illegal dumped over the years has also started a civil action in the high court in a bid to have the waste removed.
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency say they’ve been investigating the complaints of illegal dumping on the hills outside of Belfast for several years and that the arrest is the most significant developments in the case so far. The agency is also said to be in the process of trying to trace a second man in connection with the case.
