For the first time ever, Doctor Who episodes are being made available to hire via the hit TV shows official Facebook page.
Nine episodes will be released via the social media page this week, some of which have never been released on DVD previously so Doctor Who fans are in a for a real treat. The rental service has been launched by the BBC Worldwide and will allow Facebook fans of the show across the world the opportunity to view the available Doctor Who episodes.
The rental service works like a digital video store. Users must first buy credits which they then exchange for the rental of their selected Doctor Who episode. After they’ve paid their hire fee for the episode, the user then has 48 hours in which to watch their chosen Doctor Who show.
A selection of nine different Doctor Who episodes, including a number of classic shows, have been released via the service initially, although new episodes may be added to catalogue should the rental service prove popular with the Facebook fans. An episode from 1988 starring Sylvester McCoy and also the Tomb of the Cybermen episode from 1967 will be released as part of the first batch of shows made available via Facebook.
The BBC say the new Facebook rental service will allow Doctor Who fans to get their “fix” while the new series is being filmed. The six series of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith is due to begin in the autumn on the BBC.
