Hiring a skip is an easy, affordable and convenient way to dispose of large amounts of household waste in one place. But if you’re considering getting one for your home or business, you’ve probably got some questions before you take the plunge. With this guide, we cover some of the most commonly asked queries - and their answers.

How much does skip hire cost?

Skip hire costs vary dependent on the size of the skip you hire, your location and the length of the hire period. As a rough guide, prices for a small skip start at around £150. For a larger option, you could pay upwards of £500.

How big is a skip?

Skips come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so it should be easy to find one that meets your requirements. Smaller skips start at around 6 cubic yards, while bigger ones offer upwards of 40 cubic yards of space.

What can I put in my skip?

As a rule of thumb, you can put almost anything in a skip - but there are some hazardous items that are disallowed. These include paint tins, fluorescent tubes, TVs, computer monitors and medical waste. For a full list of what not to add, contact your hire provider.

How long can I keep a skip?

Typically, skips are hired for between 7 and 14 days. However, if you need to keep your skip for longer - or if you’d like it collected after a shorter period of time - your hire provider should be able to arrange this for you.

Do I need a permit?

This depends on where you plan on keeping your skip while you load it. If it’s stored on private property, such as in a garden or on a drive, no permit is necessary. However, if you plan on keeping it on a public road, you’ll need a permit from the council. In most cases, your hire provider can arrange this on your behalf, but be sure to check that your final quote includes these costs.
