Uber<\/a>, as well as the\u00a0axing of a UK Government grant, worth \u00a3700 million per year has already seen tube upgrade plans shelved. But, London’s transport authority\u00a0has responded by bullishly predicting an operating\u00a0surplus\u00a0by 2021.<\/p>\nTransport for London are expecting increased revenues when the new Crossrail starts carrying passengers in late-2018.<\/p>\n

The fall\u00a0in\u00a0passenger numbers comes despite Mayor, Sadiq Khan, imposing a prize freeze on fares. A TfL spokesperson insisted:<\/p>\n
“London is leading the way in showing how you can keep fares affordable, while still investing record amounts in creating world-class infrastructure.\u00a0Although overall ridership is currently slightly lower than originally budgeted, ridership on the bus, tube and rail services is regularly outperforming that elsewhere across the country, helped by the fares freeze, the Hopper fare and improved reliability.”<\/p>\n
David Begg<\/h3>\n
Former TfL board member,\u00a0David\u00a0Begg, has claimed they are “in a crisis.”<\/p>\n
Mr\u00a0Begg\u00a0added, “There\u2019s a genuine concern that the organisation is starting to creak.\u00a0I\u2019m starting to worry about TfL and its ability to deliver against this financial background.”<\/p>\n
