Following the success of\u00a0bike rental schemes across the UK, Edinburgh are set to add their name to that list, with the scheme \u00a0to be launched this year. Costing around \u00a3150,000, the project comes 10 years after city councillors initiated the idea of rental bikes in the city.<\/p>\n
Since the proposal, streets., London launched a scheme in 2010 and Glasgow followed\u00a0trend, launching its version for the Commonwealth Games in 2014. This new scheme is to be an extension of this.<\/p>\n
Complimenting current bike hire operations, such as ScotRail\u2019s Bike & Go at stations, this latest project will well and truly recognise Scotland for its preoccupation with the environment.<\/p>\n
City council transport convener Lesley Hinds said:<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to the funding available as part of the local government finance settlement, we\u2019ll have more resources to devote to cycling projects and we plan to use some of this extra money for a pilot cycle hire scheme.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m absolutely delighted we\u2019re going to have a pilot scheme in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll members of the transport and environment committee have been keen for many years to introduce something like this to Edinburgh”<\/p>\n
