One of Europe’s largest car rental firms, Goldcar, has found themselves in a spot of bother this week, criticised for not operating in a professional manner. According to sources, the firm are under investigation for using pushy sales tactics, forging customer signatures as well as creating fake bills for vehicle damages.
But, it is not just one disgruntled customer encouraging this investigation, with travellers from Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Malta all reporting similar experiences with the brand.
The investigation, led by the Sunday Times, uncovered some pretty shocking findings. Finding that there has been a recent surge in complaints, a great deal of customers have been unsatisfied with their car hire experience with Goldcar. And, as part of the reputable Europcar Group, their recent expansion into the UK is seeming to not be going as well as expected.
Consumer group, Which?, also surveyed Goldcar customers, coming face-to-face with many aggrieved customers. The general consensus was that the customer service was ‘poor’, getting an average of 2 out of 5 stars for customer care. Nearly 60% of customers said that they had some sort of issue with their rental. Common feedback was that there were issues with shock bills for damages people were either not aware of or didn’t agree with.
Picking up their rental cars was far from a breeze either, with most reporting that they had to wait in queues of around 30 minutes before picking up their keys.
The Sunday Times claim that the European Commission will now be thoroughly investigating the firm. This is however part of a larger project, assessing brands such as Avis, Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt and issuing fines where necessary.
