How the hire industry is changing - and why it’s great news for consumers
In the days before the internet, arranging a hire service was a frustrating and lengthy chore. You’d need to fish out the Yellow Pages, circle all the providers covering your area, and spend hours calling each individual company to get a quote. And after all that time spent scribbling details down, you’d need to flip through multiple pages of notes to try and identify the lowest price.
But now, all that’s changed. At first, the internet simply provided an easy way for customers to see all of the services offered by a certain provider. With basic search engines and drop-down menus, it suddenly became far easier to find what you were looking for - like having each company’s brochure available at the touch of a button. However, it was still necessary to visit a host of different websites in order to get a range of different quotes, and there was no easy way to compare prices from multiple providers.
Recently, however, there’s been another shift in how the hire industry operates online. Now, price comparison sites exist that allow customers to simply type in what they’re looking for, and let technology do the rest. With just a few clicks, these sites will display a selection of matching packages from different local providers, making it easy for users to choose the one that’s right for them.
But while this shift has meant that hire providers have had to adapt to a new environment, it’s spelled great news for the customers - particularly those keen on making some big savings when they book. And while previously some providers have been able to get away with charging extortionate prices, comparison sites are slowly helping consumers to eliminate the conmen and secure themselves the best deals.
Moreover, the rise of the customer review system in the model of TripAdvisor or Ebay has helped customers to make informed decisions about which providers they choose - further diminishing the risk of getting a raw deal. In fact, with all of these factors at play, there’s never been a better time to book a hire service.
